What are the types of activated carbon?
Activated carbon can be divided into the following main types according to its manufacturing materials, forms and applications:
1. Classification by manufacturing materials
Wooden activated carbon: Made of wood, it has a large specific surface area and is suitable for air purification and adsorption of gaseous pollutants.
Coal-based activated carbon: Made of coal, it has high strength and is suitable for water treatment and industrial gas purification.
Coconut shell activated carbon: Made of coconut shell, it has a large specific surface area and uniform pore distribution. It is widely used in high-end water treatment, gold extraction and other fields.
Fruit shell activated carbon: Made of fruit shells such as apricot shells and walnut shells, it is suitable for drinking water treatment, pharmaceutical industry, etc.
2. Classification by form
Powdered activated carbon (PAC, Powdered Activated Carbon):Small particles, large specific surface area, and strong adsorption capacity.Commonly used for gas phase adsorption, water treatment and pollution control.
Granular activated carbon (GAC, Granular Activated Carbon):Granular, suitable for fixed bed or fluidized bed adsorption.Widely used in water treatment and waste gas purification.
Columnar activated carbon:Pressed into a columnar shape, high strength, not easy to break.Mainly used for air purification and solvent recovery.
Spherical activated carbon:The appearance is spherical and has high mechanical strength.Used for gas purification and catalyst carrier.
Honeycomb activated carbon:The special structure provides a larger specific surface area and small airflow resistance.Commonly used for waste gas treatment and air purification.
3. Classification by pore structure
Microporous activated carbon:
The pore size is less than 2 nm, mainly adsorbing small molecules.Used for gas separation and solvent recovery.
Mesoporous activated carbon:The pore size is 2-50 nm, suitable for adsorbing larger molecules.Commonly used for the removal of organic pollutants.
Macroporous activated carbon:The pore size is greater than 50 nanometers, suitable for rapid adsorption.Used for decolorization and deodorization.
4. Classification by application field
Water treatment activated carbon:Remove odor, color, impurities.
Air purification activated carbon:Adsorb harmful gases such as formaldehyde, benzene, sulfur dioxide, etc.
Decolorization activated carbon:Applied in the decolorization process of the food and pharmaceutical industries.
Catalyst carrier activated carbon:A carrier used for chemical reaction catalysts.
Depending on specific needs, different types of activated carbon can be selected to achieve the best effect.
